A Global Event of Astronomical Proportions, Deer Park Town Center Celebrates the International Year of Astronomy

“Stars Over Deer Park Town Center” features worldwide celestial photography exhibit
Deer Park, IL– In 1609, Galileo’s telescope discovered a whole new universe filled with images humans had never seen, including mountains and craters on the moon, stars in the distance and moons around Jupiter. In commemoration of that discovery 400 years ago, more than 140 countries around the world are celebrating the International Year of Astronomy in 2009.
Not only is Deer Park Town Center participating in the global festivities, but the center has designed its own initiative called “Stars Over Deer Park Town Center.” Taking place in August 2009, the program will feature a series of educational, artistic and entertainment elements to appeal to kids and adults alike, including a limited-engagement presentation of The World at Night (TWAN) photography exhibit. TWAN is a special project of the International Year of Astronomy and features a collection of photographs of the world’s landmarks against the celestial attractions. The best night sky photographers from around the world have captured images resulting in a traveling exhibit that is being displayed internationally, including locations in Korea, Germany, Italy and South Africa, to name a few. The exhibit will be on display at Deer Park Town Center from August 1 to August 16. “‘Stars Over Deer Park Town Center’ is an exciting project because there are so many opportunities for us to create a unique, educational and entertaining experience for our customers,” said Konda Dees, marketing director at Deer Park Town Center. “The World at Night exhibit is particularly thrilling, as the United States locations are predominantly exclusive to Developers Diversified Realty properties. This provides an amazing opportunity for our customers to view a global exhibit right here in the Chicago area.”
In addition to the exhibit, Deer Park Town Center is implementing a variety of activities and events, to celebrate kick-off weekend August 7 – 9, 2009 including:
Seeing Stars During the Day – On Saturday, August 8, The Adler Planetarium will provide a special telescope for daytime solar viewing from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Deer Park Town Center gazebo. Volunteers will be available to help children and adults view the sun through the telescope, pointing out different spots and visuals. Starry Starry Night – On Sunday, August 9 at 1 p.m. children are invited to Brilliant Sky Toys & Books to make their own telescope. The store will have planispheres available showing constellations that are viewable during August and will provide all materials to make the telescopes. Children will have an opportunity to win a real star named after them. All entries will be collected and the winner will be chosen following the event. Gateway to the Stars – Anyone who purchases a Deer Park Town Center gift card or cards valued at $125 or more between August 3 and August 14 will receive two complimentary gift cards for the early bird matinee at Century Theatres at Deer Park Town Center (while supplies last). Stars of The Season – Mannequin Modeling featuring the latest fashions for fall will be featured in participating stores windows August 8, 2009 from 12pm – 4pm.
Stars of The Community – A blood drive will be held in the parking lot of Max & Erma’s Friday, August 7, 2009 from 11:00am – 4:00pm.
